Product Expansion — Done Right

We like to break our process down into 4 phases. However, we recognize that every project is different, so we'll put a specific plan together for you before we get started.

Phase 1: Product Ideation & Market Research

If you don’t already know what your next product should be, we can help you figure it out. We'll conduct market analysis to find a good opportunity and then brainstorm innovative features that will turn it into a category-leader. We can generate original product ideas or refine early concepts already on your radar. If you already know what you want to build, you can skip this step — but if you’re stuck or unsure, this phase is a powerful starting point.

Phase 2: Innovative Product Development

We don’t stop at one prototype—we create dozens. Our product development phase is all about building and testing until the product feels 90% polished, complete with all the core features you’d expect in the final version. It’s designed to look, feel, and function like a finished product. Whether you’re deciding between features, forms, or materials, our iterative prototyping process helps you make informed choices before scaling.

Phase 3: Manufacturing & Cost Optimization

In this phase, we polish and optimize your product for profitable, scalable manufacturing. Through iterative improvements, user feedback, and meticulous attention to materials and suppliers, we ensure your product can be efficiently mass-produced. We’ll handle everything from supplier negotiations and material selection to design for manufacturing (DFM) and packaging/shipping strategies, so you can confidently scale production.

Phase 4: Product Launch Support

We plug in wherever you need help — and stay out of the way where you don’t. We can assist with launch strategy, packaging design, content ideas, marketing assets, or e-commerce setup. Whether you’re selling DTC, B2B, or retail, we’ll help make sure your product is positioned to move. After launch, we offer ongoing support as needed, whether that’s problem-solving, iteration, or planning your next move. We’re your product development partner — all the way through.

What to Expect When Building and Launching With Us

Timeline

We only take on a few projects at a time so we can build products that are truly innovative, profitable, and viral-worthy. That focus lets us move fast, think strategically, and make every detail count. Most products launch within 6–10 months, but we’ll walk you through a tailored timeline before we kick things off.

Budget

Launching a new product typically requires a budget of $20k-50k. That budget includes outside costs like manufacturing, legal, and marketing—not just our services. We’ll outline a realistic estimate after an initial consultation.

Communication

You'll meet weekly or biweekly with our founders to discuss your project. In addition, we'll set up a Slack group so that you have a direct line to our team for day-to-day questions and updates.

Commitment

We can’t do this without you. Great products require great collaboration—and we only partner with teams ready to stay involved. If you’re serious about launching something great, expect to spend at least 5 hours a week working closely with our team.

The Wild Man Way

We’re not wild in how we work, but in how we think. We see opportunities others miss, crafting innovative ideas that push beyond typical solutions. Our structured process will help you launch standout products optimized for profitability and viral potential. It's smart innovation with wild results.

FAQs

Here are answers to some common questions about our product development services.

How is Wild Man Lab different from a traditional product development agency?

Wild Man Lab isn’t just a product development agency—we’re a launch partner. Unlike firms that stop at design or prototyping, we go from idea to market launch. We combine engineering, industrial design, sourcing, and go-to-market execution all under one roof. Our experience launching viral consumer products like the Krak’in means we know how to build products people actually want—and how to sell them.

What types of products do you specialize in helping existing brands develop?

We specialize in developing consumer products that stand out—especially in categories like lifestyle, fitness, kitchen accessories, outdoor gear, novelty gifts, and social or viral-friendly products. Whether you’re looking to refresh an existing SKU with a more aesthetic design or launch something entirely new, we help you build products that get people talking. At this time, we are not able to help with consumables, like food and beverages, or products with complex custom software or electronics.

Can you help us improve or re-launch an existing product?

Absolutely. We often work with companies that already have a version 1 and are looking to improve functionality, aesthetics, manufacturability, or marketability. We can audit your current design, identify opportunities for innovation, and help relaunch with a version that’s more appealing to consumers and more cost-effective to produce.

What does the process look like from idea to launch?

Our end-to-end product development process includes market research, concept design, prototyping, manufacturing support, and go-to-market planning. We start by identifying demand, then design and engineer a solution, test it with real users, and prepare you for a successful launch through ecommerce or retail channels.

Are you able to work with in-house design or R&D teams?

Yes. We often act as an extension of your internal team to help you move faster and innovate more effectively. Whether you have an R&D department, industrial designers, or engineers on staff, we can plug in and provide additional speed, creativity, expertise, or bandwidth where you need it.

How fast can you go from concept to working prototype?

Depending on the complexity of the product, we can go from concept to an initial physical prototype in as little as 7 days. We use rapid prototyping tools like 3D printing, in-house CAD design, and short-run fabrication to accelerate development and get real feedback fast.

What if we already have a prototype or version 1—can you help us make it better?

Yes. If you have a prototype that’s not quite working—or just not ready for prime time—we can help improve the design, simplify manufacturing, reduce costs, or enhance the user experience. We specialize in redesigning products to make them more functional, brand-aligned, and market-ready.

Do you offer help with manufacturing and sourcing?

Yes. Once your design is ready, we can help you find and vet manufacturers, source materials, manage production runs, and troubleshoot quality control issues. We have a network of trusted manufacturing partners across the U.S., Canada, U.K., China, and beyond, and we’ll help you select the right one for your goals.

Can you help us identify which of our product ideas are most worth pursuing?

Definitely. One of our specialties is helping brands prioritize product ideas based on market demand, competition, cost, and viral or social potential. We use a variety of software tools to help assess market opportunities utilizing keyword data, Amazon and TikTok trends, and customer surveys to validate which product ideas are most likely to succeed.

What if our brand has a unique style or strict brand guidelines?

We’re brand-first in our approach. Every product we develop is custom-designed to reflect your brand’s personality, voice, and values. We work within your visual guidelines and tone to ensure that the final product feels like a natural extension of your brand—not something generic or off-the-shelf.

Do you take over the entire process, or just support certain parts?

We’re flexible. Some clients hire us for full-scope product development—from idea to launch. Others bring us in for specific support, like prototyping, cost-reduction redesigns, or sourcing. We’ll tailor our involvement based on what you need most.

Do you offer ongoing support after the product launch?

Yes. After launch, we can continue to support in an advisory role. We’ve launched our own products and helped many others do the same, so we understand the post-launch challenges brands face. Post-launch, we are also happy to help you ideate, prototype, manufacture, and launch more products to further scale your brand.

Can you help us with packaging design and unboxing experience?

Absolutely. We believe great products deserve great packaging. We design packaging that enhances the customer experience, aligns with your brand, and stands out online and on retail shelves. This includes structural design, artwork, inserts, and even influencer-friendly unboxing elements.

How do you ensure product ideas are actually marketable and profitable?

We validate product ideas through keyword research and market analysis using various software tools, and also through consumer testing. Our goal is to create products that aren’t just innovative—but also sell. We combine creative product ideation with a data-driven approach to make sure your product solves a real problem and fits an active market.

What’s the minimum commitment or scope of work to get started?

We offer different engagement models depending on your goals. Some clients start with a short-term strategy or prototyping sprint, while others engage us for a full launch project. Get in touch, and we’ll find a starting point that fits your timeline and budget.

Do you work with enterprise-level companies or just startups?

We work with companies of all sizes—from scrappy startups to established brands and enterprise teams. If you’re looking to move faster, stand out in your category, or build a truly unique product, we can help you make it happen.

Can you work under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)?

Yes. We understand that your ideas are proprietary, and we’re happy to sign an NDA before getting into the details. In fact, many of our clients work with us under strict confidentiality agreements.

How do you price your services for existing brands?

Pricing depends on the scope of the project. We offer fixed-price phases for strategy, prototyping, and development, as well as ongoing retainers for brands looking for long-term support. Once we understand your goals, we’ll put together a clear proposal with timeline and cost breakdowns.

Do you take equity in the businesses you work with?

In some cases, yes. We often work with brands using a hybrid model: a mix of fixed pricing plus a small equity or revenue share in the product we help develop. This structure helps reduce the upfront investment while aligning both sides for long-term success. Let us know if this is something you’d be interested in discussing.

Who owns the intellectual property (IP) for the product you help develop?

You do. When we work on a product for your brand, you retain full ownership of all intellectual property, including designs, CAD files, technical documentation, and any resulting patents. If a patent is filed, it will be assigned to you. In some cases, depending on the agreement, we may receive a royalty or equity share—but IP ownership always remains with the client unless explicitly stated otherwise.
